Day 19 & 20: Through Death Valley NP
& Bishop to Yosemite NP, CA

Friday, September 29, 2000

After having breakfast and finally sending off some postcards we left the hotel, all packed, at about 10:15. We went back to California through Death Valley NP. Wow... It was hot, about 42 degrees Celsius. That's why there's so few pictures of it to see, we didn't really feel like spending much time without Air Conditioning. Unfortunately for a part of the drive we had to, to prevent the engine from overheating. One of the less comfortable times of our trip, which actually caused Wendy to get sick...
We arrived at Bishop, CA at about 6 PM, where we stayed at Brown's Town Campground.
We drove 311 miles today.

Fortunately Wendy felt better today, so we were able to continue our trip. Our only 'mission' in Bishop was to see 'Erik Schat's Bakkerij'. We had already caught a glimpse of it the day before and were curious because Erick Schat was originally from the Netherlands, like us.
After we had completed this mission, we went on to Yosemite NP, where we had our first stop to eat some of the bread we had bought at Erik Schat's. We stopped at Tenaya Lake, which we all felt was very beautiful.

We also hiked into the 'Tuolumne grove' to see the giant sequoia's and took a shorter walk to the 'Bridalveil Fall'. We camped just outside Yosemite, west of the park, at 'Yosemite Lakes' in Groveland. People told us not to worry about bears searching our cars for dinner, because the garbage containers were open and were therefore the only place the bears would go to for food. Very reassuring!
We drove 170 miles today.
