Day 21 - 23: San Francisco, CA

Sunday, October 1, 2000

The first day of the last week of our trip and we headed for the coast. We left Yosemite lakes at 9:15 in the morning and intended to have reached San Francisco at about 2 PM. Unfortunately we missed a turn somewhere on the highway which delayed us a little. We made it to the Visitor Centre and arrived there 5 minutes before it would close at 3 PM, which gave us just enough time (after we had persuaded the guard at the door) to collect a lot of information and buy ourselves 'Muni Passports' for public transport. After that we also had to find a campground. The campground we had aimed for didn't have any shower facilities, and we didn't want to spend three nights not being able to take a shower.
After we had been searching our guides for a while we drove to our original choice (Mt. Tamalpais SP), to check if there were really no showers, and then we drove on to Samuel P. Taylor SP, in Marin County, north of San Francisco, about an hour's drive from the Bay Area.
We drove 264 miles today.

All of the pictures are actually of this day. We went to the Northern part of San Francisco, to walk around Fisherman's wharf, shop at Peer 39 and.. visit Alcatraz Island. We had booked our tickets with the 'Blue and Gold Fleet' the day before to make sure we wouldn't have to miss this.

We had dinner at an Italian restaurant near Ghirardelli Square. As we were talking we were asked by an American couple where we were from, because they couldn't agree if we were Scandinavian or Dutch. This is how we met Steve and Brenda from Kentucky, with whom we took a ride on a cable car and walked around San Francisco that evening. We had a great time!
We drove 98 miles today.

No pictures at all.. Wen and I stayed the morning at the campground, to do some laundry - washing by hand, that is, while Marco and Igor went to get some food and other groceries. We went to San Francisco in the afternoon, checking out another shopping area and Chinatown.
We drove 70 miles today.
