Day 14: Capitol Reef NP, UT

Sunday, September 24, 2000

When we got up the weather was slightly better, but much colder. Later on the news we saw reports of snow in parts of Utah, which had come early. After shopping we had some coffee and hot chocolates and then got in the car and drove to the southwest.
We arrived at Capitol Reef National Park around noon. For me, this park was one of the pleasant surprises of our trip. It has colorful rocks and orchards which are like oasis, and all around you can find traces of the Mormon settlers that once lived in the area.

The road out of Capitol Reef NP was surprising as well. After over a week of mostly rocky territory with 'gaps' in it we now got to more mountainous parts, with lots of pine trees. We also passed a lot of cattle along the side of road and couldn't resist taking pictures.
Our destination that day was escalante, where we stayed for one night at Escalante Petrified forest State Park. It was a very nice park on the edge of a lake, but it was very chilly at night.
We drove 259 miles today.
