Day 10 & 11: Canyon de Chelly NP, AZ

Wednesday, September 20, 2000

We got up at 8 and left Grand Canyon Camper village an hour and a half later. We arrived at the Visitor Centre at Canyon de Chelly at 3 PM, which was 4 PM Daylight Saving Time, the local time in that area. After putting up our tents at Cottonwood campground we went shopping and had lunch at Burger King. My knee still hurt but unfortunately we couldn't find anything to support it... too bad. We also bought a calling card and made a phonecall to the KOA in Moab, Utah, where we planned on staying from friday to monday. We made reservations just to be sure.

We spent the evening at the campground, reading, playing games and making some notes for the diary. We 'cooked' dinner and went to bed pretty early, although the temperature was more pleasant overhere.
We drove 240 miles today.

We went to discover Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto today and it took us most of the day to see as much as we could. After the very Grand canyon it was nice to be in an environment that was easier to take in. At the overlooks we could actually see the canyon floor, and everything on it, like the 'hogans' (traditional Navajo homes). We also hiked the only trail accessible unattended, the White House ruins trail, to ... the White house ruins, right! These ruins are very old and were built by the Anasazi, who left their marks all through the area. Just look at the pictures to get an impression of how much there is worth seeing overthere.
That night the weather started to change a little, it got windy...
We drove 79 miles today.
